Sore Shenirer, פֿון בלעטער פֿון מײַן לעבן, from Pages from My Life

Malke Kheyfets-Tuzman, Ikh bin frog

29:9-11 You stand this day, all of you, before the Eternal your God—you tribal heads, you elders, and you officials, all the men of Israel, 10] you children, you women, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to water drawer— 11 to enter into the covenant of the Eternal your God, which the Eternal your God …

9 איר שטײט הײַנט אַלע פֿאַר יהוה אײַער גאָט, אײַערע הױפּטלײַט, אײַערע שבֿטים, אײַערע עלטסטע, און אײַערע אױפֿזעערס, אַלע מענער פֿון ישׂראל, 10 אײַערע קלײנע קינדער, אײַערע װײַבער, און דײַן פֿרעמדער װאָס אין דײַן לאַגער, פֿון דײַן האָלצהעקער ביז דײַן װאַסערשעפּער; 11 אַז דו זאָלסט אַרײַנטרעטן אין דעם בונד פֿון יהוה דײַן גאָט און אין זײַן שבֿועה װאָס יהוה דײַן גאָט שליסט מיט דיר הײַנט;

This passage highlights the fact that everyone, including women and woodchoppers and water carriers (the simplest folk) are part of this covenant. Both poems relate to these verses.

I AM WOMAN

I am the exalted Rachel
whose love lit the way for Rabbi Akiba.

I am the small bashful village girl
who grew up among the tall poplars
and blushed at the “good morning” of her brother’s tutor.

I am the pious girl
who paled as her mother raised her hands to her eyes
for the blessing over the Sabbath candles.

I am the obedient bride
who humbly bent her head beneath the shears
the night before the wedding.

I am the rabbi’s daughter
who offered her chaste body to save a Jewish town
and afterwards set fire to herself.

I am the woman of valor
who bore and fed children
to earn herself a little place in paradise.

I am the mother
who, in great hardship,
raised sons to be righteous men.

I am the Hassid’s daughter,
infused with her father’s fervor,
who went out defiant, with her hair cropped,
to educate the people.

I am the barrier-breaker
who distributed Bread and Freedom
and freed love from the wedding canopy.

I am the pampered girl
who set herself behind a plow
to force the gray desert into green life.

I am the one whose fingers
tightened around the hoe,
on guard for the steps of the enemy.

I am the one who stubbornly
carries around a strange alphabet
to implant in children’s ears.

I am all these and many more.

And everywhere, always, I am woman.

THE ALEF-BEYSNIK

The water-carrier Itsikl, he is a Shabes-Jew,
That means that only on Shabes, does he pray, his pail is at rest too.
Praying means for Itsikl that he reviews the alphabet
And a hundred times he covers his sider  with pearls of sweat,
But yet this letter adorns his name, as he is called, at last,
And comes forth from Itsikl safe and sound with no errors from the past. And searches for the way to heaven so far away—
He, itsikl, toils night and day,
Repeats the alphabet a hundred times,
Even a hundred and one, to be fair,
And you, oh God, compose from this a prayer!

From PAGES FROM MY LIFE

One Friday evening, my cousin, an active member of Ruth,* came to visit and invited me to one of their gatherings. I went along to make her happy, but was shocked to see with my own eyes a leader of the group, turning on the light. I knew in advance that this club wasn’t the most pious of organizations, but it never occurred to me that they would desecrate the sabbath in public. I was in a quandary about whether to stay or go, but I thought that somehow I was meant to be there. I remember that, sadly, the ‘sermon’ was full of sacrilege and heresy, and that daughters of hasidic parents sat listening to this. their fathers were certainly busy at that moment with the Talmud and their mothers with the Yiddish Bible, and I remember that the thought was born in me that if our girls had an environment of their own and places to go, things would certainly be very different.

*Ruth was an early zionist woman’s club in Krakow.

… In his sermon, he [the rabbi of the Orthodox synagogue in Vienna which Schenirer visited while a refugee there] depicted the greatness and sublimity of the historical figure of Judith, and through her, he eloquently and passionately called upon Jewish women and their daughters to act according to the model of this Jewish heroine.

It’s a shame that I have forgotten the beautiful thoughts and points of that sermon, and what I do remember I lack the eloquence to convey on paper.

There is one thing that I cannot forget. even as I was caught up in the spiritual description of the character of Judith, it occurred to me: ah, if only all those women and girls in krakow were here now to learn who we are and where we come from

It struck me that our major problem is that our sisters know so little about our history, which alienates them from our people and its traditions. If only  they knew of our holy martyrs, of had the  slightest grasp of the heroism of our great men and women — things would be entirely different.
