She sits
all cried out
and turns, turns back
her black hair
crowned with ash-gray,
and twists it,
fastening with pins,
into a round bun.
Every silver hair
tucked one by one
underneath
deep underneath.
Every strand’s stab
a single pain
not to be heard from.
So dead leaves
are buried one by one
in fresh black earth
far underground
deep underground
not to be seen
and not to be
thought of.

SUN AND RAIN
I say to my weeping sister
and to my brothers,
trembling over the Kaddish:
Let’s go out into the street
and face the sun.
Let’s put on mew clothes
and sing,
sing the citizens’ song.
We have become important citizens.
We have rooted ourselves
in American soil.
Someone shudders,
someone almost smiles—
a little ray of sun in the downpour.
Father,
how does it go, the blessing
for sun with rain?
